The Fig Tree
In gospel of Mark 11 : 12-25 KJV, there is a narration of how Jesus cursed the fig tree. The fig tree had leaves and I would assume healthy leaves.
Jesus saw at a distance, and he was eager to eat a fruit. On getting to the tree, the bible recorded that Jesus found nothing because it was not its season to bear fruits.
This means since it is not its season, then no one should expect it to bear fruits. However Jesus commanded, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again and by the next morning, the fig tree had withered from the roots.
When I first read this encounter of Jesus with the fig tree as a young girl. I said ohhhhh Jesus why? I felt so bad for the fig tree. 🙂
However as I grew and as God inspires me about the seasons of life, I received more understanding. The fig tree had no business having healthy leaves when it was out of season. It appears Jesus was saying “if you want to have healthy leaves out of season, better bear fruits then”.
This comes to remind you and I that our lives are in seasons and Jesus understand that better because He was once here on earth in the flesh. However, through this fig tree, Jesus left a message here on earth for us that no matter what season we are in, we must continually bear fruits.
There are four seasons for example in the Country I live in. When it is winter and it is very cold, we adjust. We prepare ahead in fact. Ensuring our winter clothes and jackets are in good condition. During this season, we do not stay at home refusing to work because it is winter. If we do that, we risk living in poverty.
As Spring, summer and autumn approaches, we prepare as well. And life continues.
What we do in these different seasons is that we adjust in every way possible.
Therefore I remind you, there will be tremendous happy times in our lives, and challenges of life will always visit us as well. I remind you that when we have trials, God remains God. We have to continually see Him as the first in our times of great trials and challenges. We do not praise Him or acknowledge Him alone in our happy times. When we are in our favourable season or out of it, we are to acknowledge God, and continue to bear fruits unto righteousness.
I ask for the grace to commit ourselves to bring forth the fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and patience, through Christ our Lord.
Amen
